I went with a used Alex attenuator over the rockcrusher, mainly due to price, since I could never find a used rockcrusher, likely since they are good and haven't been out as long. I have only heard of a few complaints on the rockcrusher, one being that the attenuation steps are too big of gaps, they wish they were 3dB instead of 4dB steps.
As far as I know though, if you are using it as an attenuator and your speaker cab is in the signal path, the dummy load doesn't matter and won't affect your sound. The Ultimate Attenuator is quite good, extremely dynamic. I would put it up against the expensive units without hesitation. I've seen them used for $200 - $300. My latest weird experiment is in using the Univalve or Bivalve amps as a distortion pedal (but includes the power tube within its [load-box-like] line-out), into another amp.

The attenuation method allows you to use your live rig in a practice environment, but since you have to tweak the tone settings at lower volume settings, I'm not sure if you really gain anything other than getting time with your more powerful amps, which is not a bad thing either.
